As the presidential candidates prepare to discuss some of the most important issues facing our country at their final debate tonight, Environment Iowa released a new report documenting that the average temperature in Des Moines in 2007 was 1.6°F above the historical average.
Des Moines, IA—Scientists have said for years that global warming was “loading the dice” when it comes to increasing the frequency of severe storms, and a new Environment Iowa report makes it clear that the West North Central Region is already experiencing extreme downpours much more frequently. Specifically, the new report found that storms with heavy rainfall are now 24% percent more frequent in the Northern Midwest than they were 60 years ago.
Environment Iowa released a report showing average summer temperatures were 3.5 degrees higher in 2006 in Des Moines, Dubuque, Waterloo and Sioux City over the averages for 1971 to 2000 - the effects of global warming.
Governor Chet Culver signed the first major bill to address global warming in Iowa in a signing ceremony at the State Capitol today, attended by Environment Iowa.
The Iowa Senate today approved Senate File 574, which is the first major bill to address global warming in Iowa. The bill creates an advisory council to find solutions to global warming and sets up a tracking system for global warming pollution.
The Iowa Senate today took an important step towards solving global warming by approving a bill that gives the Iowa Department of Natural Resources the authority to quantify and assess potential greenhouse gas emissions from power plants and other sources of pollution.
